Yoruba Gelede Mask
Nigeria
#MH-19
An enormous repertoire of masks are included in Yoruba gelede masking, with complex meanings and symbols shown as superstructures to a face usually wearing tribal scarifications. Gelede dance ceremonies are mostly concerned with powers of "our mothers", personifying women as primeval givers and takers of life – as mothers/potential witches. Yoruba culture is highly complex and includes a very sophisticated cosmology, divination system and ceremonies too difficult to describe briefly. As the Yoruba are very numerous, a substantial amount of their art has been collected.
