Saraswathi Veena

South India
#M-15
The most important solo instrument of South Indian (Karnatic) music is the veena. This type of veena is always shown played by the goddess Saraswati, the patroness of the arts. The monster head (yali) at the end of the veena pegbox resembles the ornaments on the temple towers of South India. The yali supposedly eats bad influences (wrong notes?).

This is a truly superb veena completely ornamented in staghorn from the workshop of Ramjee of Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu (labeled at base of neck). It has numerous special details unique to this master builder: adjustable nuts for fine tuning of the drone strings, a bronze rail under the frets, rosewood walls on the outside of the fret wax ledges, an extension on the rosewood bridge of some mysterious acoustical properties, one-piece rosewood pegs and an incredibly fine tone. The frets are set apparently for a tempered tuning. The condition is excellent, no cracks in the jackwood body. It is dated 1969. The level of craftsmanship on this veena is absolutely first quality. A real treasure for a veena professional.
